        In the early 1800's, German forester Karl Freiherr Drais von Sauerbronn invented a simple, hand-powered drive mechanism. Although his invention was replaced by more advanced devices, the name "Draisine" is still used in many languages to refer to small, self-propelled rail vehicles, like handcars.
