LGB 24832 Pennsylvania Railroad Electric Locomotive GG1 Aster, 4877, #068 Tuscan-Red, with Lights and Sound, Limited Edition, Collection Item
With the 4877, another GG1 of the Pennsylvania Railroad is ready for use on the LGB layouts. The original sound of this popular electric locomotive was also implemented in this LGB / Aster model. Decoder onboard, doors that can be opened, complete driver's cab equipment and lighting make the GG1 model a very special experience. Two Bühler motors provide the necessary pulling power for the electric locomotive in front of freight or passenger trains on the LGB systems. The LGB range includes the right wagons for this 1st class electric locomotive.

As early as 1915, the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) - “The Standard Railroad of the World” - began electrifying some suburban lines around Philadelphia. After Westinghouse introduced a new compact electric motor in 1927 that could be installed between the wheels of a locomotive, electrification of the PRR mainline from Washington, D.C. to New York City was considered in 1931.
However, the first PRR passenger train electric locomotives of the type P-5a did not meet the expectations placed on them. They were not able to pull more than 10 of the heavy all-steel passenger cars. Furthermore, the running properties left a lot to be desired, cracks in the axles led to breakdowns and the end driver's cabs offered locomotive drivers relatively little protection in the event of collisions on level crossings without barriers compared to steam locomotives.

Therefore, two
middle driver's cabs were planned for the successor model. Comparisons
of a four-coupled 2-D-2 locomotive with a rigid chassis and a locomotive
with an articulated 2-Co-Co-2 drive unit showed that the articulated
drive ran more smoothly, which then went into series production with the
GG1. The streamlined locomotive body was redesigned by the famous
industrial designer Raymond Loewy, which led to a classic in locomotive
construction. A total of 139 GG1 locomotives were built from 1934 to
1943. An oil-fired steam boiler supplied the train heating, so the GG1
had filler necks for oil (“Fuel Oil”) and water (“Water”).
For many decades,
the locomotives with speeds of up to 160 km / h were the hallmark of the
Pennsylvania Railroad. After they were initially used primarily in
passenger traffic, they could also be observed in freight traffic over
the years. The last GG1s were retired in 1983 after they had been in
service with the successor companies of the Pennsy - Penn Central,
Conrail, Amtrak and New Jersey Transit Authority. Today, 16 of these
beautifully designed locomotives have been preserved, but none are in
working order.
