LGB 25559 Durango and Silverton (D&S) Diesel Loco w/Lights and Sound
The Durango & Silverton Narrow-Gauge Railroad, which is now a famous
museum railroad and tourist attraction, was opened in the 1880s. For
more than 70 kilometers / 43 miles, it winds its way along the Animas
River and connects the city of Durango with the mining town of
Silverton. The route was previously used to transport gold and silver
ore from the mines in the San Juan region. These days, it caters
exclusively for tourist passenger traffic. In addition to the class K-36
and K-37 steam locos, the railroad uses the class DL 535 diesel locos
built by Alco and originally from the White Pass & Yukon Railroad,
which are equipped with a 1,200-hp engine.
